So I arrived in Brussels, almost! After my usual screw up of booking flight and hotel in the wrong month and realising my actual flight post change was 2 hours earlier than I thought! I did make it. Got to the NH Hotel at the airport, dumped my suitcase and decided to head downstairs to get some din din. As per norm, being alone, one tends to automatically go to the phone, check emails, social media, news etc. But I got a little bored and put the phone down. Yes shock horror. Sitting alone, instead of looking down, I looked around.
People watching is a favourite pastime of mine. You get a snapshot of people’s lives and conversations. It is strangely therapeutic and dangerously addictive.
Looking around, you have groups of people talking about business over a bottle of wine. Ever so slightly getting louder. One woman clearly a little tipsy as she walked to the restroom holding onto the wall. Amusing.
Two gents next to me speaking in French. Couldn’t make out what they were saying but it looked pretty intense. Then my eyes moved over to the other loners in the lounge. Some as you’d expect head down on their phones, others on the phone actually speaking, yes rare these days, others working on their laptop, and one woman actually eating. She doesn’t look like she’s enjoying her food. Which fills me with great hope as I patiently wait for my wok scampi. I kept glancing over to reception really hoping to see the beautiful receptionist again, needed something nice because this was depressing as fuck.
After observing the physical actions before me, my mind wandered deeper. What were each of these people like? The conversations they were having, were they fake, just getting by to pass time until bed, complaining about work, were there any objectives to what was quite honestly mind numbing talk? Looking around only a few smiles most faces were very serious, and very bored. Okay I guess it is is weird sitting by yourself smiling like an idiot. Oh man no wonder I get stares, not because I’m brown, but because of my stupid grin.
So why am I saying all of this. Why am I sharing and writing this down. Well it goes back to what I’m actually doing, people watching and to that end, I’m going to keep on sharing my people watching experiences, and please, I implore you to share yours with me. Why? Because it’s frickin awesome! Agreed this experience was not the perfect example of awesomeness but unfortunately that’s life although deep down it was a little entertaining. Also, yes I know what you’re thinking… that wok scampi was not nice.
